Great Tips to Make Great Labels

Labels are the most recognizable part of many products. A strong design makes it easier for your product to stand out in a crowded marketplace. To make that happen, you should be sure to follow these label creation tips:

You need to know what the purpose of the label is and where it is going to be used. The purpose of the label will greatly influence the design. If you are creating a food label for an Italian sauce, you will probably want to use the colors of the Italian flag – green, red and white. The colors that you use in your label really depend upon the market you are trying to reach. If you use colors and a design that is out of step with that market, you will probably have trouble making sales.

The graphics of your label need to be eye catching. One way to do this is to use a photograph in your label. You need to be sure that the picture is of sufficient quality and is of an appropriate subject for your product area. For an Italian sauce, you might want to have photos or graphics of the fresh ingredients in your product – tomatoes, peppers and so forth. If you use a stock photo that someone else created, you will want to be sure that you do not violate any copyrights.

Many small companies may design their labels in Microsoft Word. But if you are trying to make your labels look very professional, you should consider using good photo software, such as Photoshop or another type of image editing software. If you are using good software, it will help you to create a more professional design.

Think a lot about the types of fonts that you are going to use in your design. Some studies show that serif fonts have more readability than sans-serif fonts. However, this is not an absolute truth. Just keep in mind that the customer needs to be able to read the key parts of your label from a decent distance. Also, the customer needs to be able to take in the important elements of the label in a two or three second glance. If you make the person read too much, he or she is going to skip past your product. The key items in the front of the label are the product name and the name of your company. Your customer should be able to read the label from six feet away.

Also, remember that you stay with a theme in your product labels. For your brand to be easy to recognize, you should keep the major design elements of the label through the whole product line. If the consumer is viewing different types of products within your product line, they should be able to recognize that they are still dealing with the same company.

By keeping these tips in mind as you create your labels, you will be more successful in creating a label that works for your company and will increase your sales.
